About Carolynn Baker
I am a collector of maps, charts, and books on all types of cartography. Maps of cities bisected by rivers are of particular interest to me; the interplay between water and architecture.
It is within the last two years that I have transitioned into a two two-dimensional format. All kinds of navigational charts have inspired me – from very early Polynesian charts to modern subway maps. I look at the images within charts or maps.
These new pieces echo the terrain – fields, roads, bridges, channel markers and water depths to create a graphic amalgam. The works are sectioned into grid systems; fragments within fragments that are embroidered with latitude, longitude, symbols, text and shapes. The map is no longer a tool but an artistic expression using its vocabulary.
Carolynn Baker grew up in the Boston and New Bedford areas. She graduated from The Rhode Island School of Design with a BFA in Sculpture. She has been working for seven years and works and lives at The Ropeworks in New Bedford, MA.
